Assessment Reflections

Assessment 1: Personal Reflection

The first assignment in the unit, Professional Orientation, titled ‘Personal Reflection’, I was told to critically think about myself and what areas I strive in and areas that need improvement. I outlined that I believe some of my strongest attributes are being informative and concise when describing or reporting on certain topics which will be integral to my future discipline.

I received a high distinction (87/100) for this assessment but I was shown that there are still areas to improve on in my work through my teacher’s feedback. She highlighted a section of my opening paragraph where the wording was quite confusing. I’ve since tried to work on the structure of my sentences when I am referring to the actions or words of another person. By developing this particular area I will be able to properly explain a situation or an upcoming event which will work hand in hand with wanting to be a journalist and commentator.

I also made a small subheading mistake, as I labelled the reference section ‘Bibliography’ instead of the correct naming ‘References’. Although this is minor, it still cost me a few marks which could have given me a score in the nineties. I have ensured that I don’t make that mistake over the duration of this first semester.

Assessment 2: Pitch Your Profession

The second assignment, a presentation on the field you are majoring in, allowed me to obtain a deeper knowledge of the history behind sports media and where it is heading in the years to come. I acknowledged that whilst the industry is currently at a crossroads, it will transition over to an online landscape within the next decade.

For this presentation I received a distinction (76.3/100) but there were plenty of errors in my preparation that could have heightened my marks. The feedback I received highlighted this problem as my teacher identified that some of the sources I used were not of the standard expected in university. Instead of only using journal articles and peer reviewed work, I incorporated websites such as ‘National Geographic’. In the future I should definitely be smarter when selecting and using references as in order to create a credible and reliable piece of work, you have to utilise professional articles.

However, the feedback I received reiterated to me that I am very capable of engaging an audience with my presentations and can balance easily between looking at my slides/notes and using eye contact with the room.
