Workshop Info

The workshops this semester have been both fascinating and enjoyable as the lesson plans have involved practical aspects which I like. Learning about the world of communications is vitally important for the career I want to have, as in order to produce content that is engaging with a large audience, I have to understand what is the best way to communicate with them. The presentations in the final weeks of the semester built upon aspects of what I had learnt from this unit. They were insightful and fun to watch and listen to and I thought everyone was really supportive of one another.

Below are the ‘Minute Papers’ from this semester which were filled out after each workshop.

What was the most significant (useful, meaningful, surprising etc.) thing you learned during this session?

Week 2:

How vast the world of communications is when you understand how many individual niches there are such as journalism, marketing, sports media etc.

Week 3:

The reliance on social media for every field of study. Obviously it is the most useful tool for every discipline but hearing people discuss how their field of interest is heavily reliant on it really puts into perspective its role now in society.

Week 4:

The skill of crafting headlines. As someone who aspires to become a sports journalist, learning the most important ways to construct a headline will be very useful.

Week 6:

The most useful thing I learnt this week was surrounding how to interact with the guest speaker at the Communications Cafe next week. This is important as I want to try and work on building connections into the sports media industry.

Week 9:

It was quite surprising to learn about our digital footprints. The tutorial was really shocking for me as my lecturer showed the importance of monitoring your digital footprint because of its possible impact on your career.

Week 10:

Incredibly interesting to hear just how similar the field of journalism is to sports media. Even though this is quite obvious, it’s more alarming when you hear it from another student.

Week 11:

Learning about the marketing communications field from those students' presentations was fascinating as I've always been intrigued as to how business target certain populations and demographics.

Week 12:

Since I presented this week I had a fairly good understanding as to what other student were talking about in terms of sports media. But it was interesting to see how they approached their presentation compared to mine.

What questions remain in your mind at the end of the sessions?

Week 2:

As someone who has a more advanced knowledge of multiple sports than others, how do I properly articulate what is happening in a certain aspect of sport to people who don’t understand?

Week 3:

What is the most beneficial social media platform for businesses to advertise off?

Week 4:

For the self reflection assignment, what sources should I be using to back up my information?

Week 6:

I’m quite a confident speaker when meeting new people but I haven’t had many conversations with industry professionals. What are some useful tips as to how to communicate with these types of people and how do you get information out of them that is useful?

Week 9:

Are digital footprints something all employers look at? Do they believe it properly portrays the actual personality of a possible employee?

Week 10:

Is there a certain website created that is better for personal blogs than others? Do they all offer similar experiences?

Week 11:

How big of an impact has it been for business in terms of targeting their products towards a certain audience since the advancements in data analysis?

Week 12:

Has the last decade been the most impactful upon the sports media industry in terms of job opportunities?
